NHS workers first to trial track and trace app from today

NHS workers will be the first to test the app on the Isle of Wight with ministers hoping it will be successfully rolled out to the rest of the island’s population on Thursday. The track and trace app is part of the Government’s strategy for easing lockdown measures across the UK as they hope it will identify who has coronavirus and where it spreads. If the tests are successful it could be rolled out across the country within weeks as ministers seek to shape a strategy to allow some economic activity to resume, with the long-awaited ‘roadmap’ for easing lockdown being published on Sunday. Health secretary Matt Hancock said there is ‘high privacy’ in the contact-tracing app and that a user’s phone will store anonymously the information about all the phones it has been within two...

Today’s Weather: Cooler Air Flows Into The Region

A cold front slipped through the area Monday. High pressure behind this front will provide some dry weather the next couple of days before a storm system grazes the region Thursday. Temperatures Tuesday afternoon will get into the 50s to low 60s with plenty of sunshine and moderate breezes. The high will continue to keep any storms at bay through Wednesday with a continuation of sunshine and slightly cooler temperatures. On Thursday, we'll watch an area of low pressure approach the region from the south. If this storm gets close enough, we could look at more general rainfall, but right now expect clouds with scattered showers and cooler temperatures. There's a break in the action until another system brings light precipitation Friday night and perhaps into Saturday. Even colde...

Liquor shops not to be reopened in Chennai 7 May

Chennai: A day after announcing that TASMAC wine shops across Tamilnadu would be reopened on 7 May, the Tamilnadu government today said liquor outlets would not be reopened in Chennai alone on that day. It also said fresh date for the reopening of wine shops in the metropolis would be announced later. Sources said the decision was taken because of the unprecedented increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the capital. In what could be seen as music to the ears of tipplers, who were left ‘high and dry’ in the wake of lockdown to tackle the spread of coronavirus, the Tamilnadu government on Monday announced opening of State-owned TASMAC liquor shops from May seven, but with some stringent conditions. An official release here said the shops in the State would be allowed to open...

Gold Price Dips As Coronavirus-Led Restrictions Ease

Gold, which is considered an alternative asset during times of economic and political turmoil, rose 18 per cent last year due to the tariff war and interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. Gold prices slipped on Tuesday as moves by some countries to relax coronavirus-led restrictions overshadowed concerns of souring US-China relations and dampened the metal's safe-haven appeal. Spot gold eased 0.1 per cent to $1,700.14 per ounce at 0524 GMT (10:54 am in India). US gold futures fell 0.4 per cent to $1,706.10 an ounce. "We are holding quite steady around the $1,700 level. On one side, you've got easing in lockdowns and that is probably improving investor sentiment and a move away from safe havens towards risk assets," said ING analyst Warren Patterson. "On the other side, ten...

U.S. Stocks To Watch Today

Disney will provide its quarterly earnings report today after the market close, and its shares will surely be active during the upcoming trading session. Analysts expect that Disney will report revenue of $17.5 billion and earnings of $0.90 per share. This time, the main focus will be on Disney’s plan to navigate through the current environment. While the world economies begin to lift virus containment measures, it is not clear when and how the entertainment venues like Disney parks will open. The coronavirus pandemic dealt a material blow to Disney’s business, and it’s hard to estimate the timing of its recovery. That’s why the company’s stock did not rebound as fast as other leading companies’ shares and is still down about 30% year-to-date. The report and the subsequent ear...
