Mount St Helens: what happened?
In response to a landslip that occurred on Sunday night, May 14, 2023 at midnight, Highway 504 now offers access to Mount St. Helens and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest from Skamania County’s west. However, it remains impassable past milepost 43.

Mount Landslide: what is it?
Many people were left stranded in Washington state over the weekend of Sunday, May 14th, 2023 and Monday, May 15th, 2023 due to a landslide that swept away a large portion of the route connecting Mount St. Helens’ summit and the rest of the area.
On Monday, 15 May 2023, the Washington State Department of Transportation inspected the damage to SR 504, also known as Spirit Lake Highway.
Landslide Mounting Instructions
As seen in the pictures taken at the site of the landslide, a large amount of dirt, gravel, and other debris clogged up the road and left motorists stranded. A photograph of the destruction of the landslide from a different perspective was published by the King County Sheriff’s Department’s Air Support Unit.
As a result of the mudslide, WSDOT issued a tweet warning motorists not to enter the area around Coldwater Lake, near milepost 45.
Was Mount St Helens Eruption Landslide evacuated?
On Twitter, the KCSOASU reported that it was able to safely remove 12 individuals and one pet from the area after intervening to assist people stuck near the mudslide.
Johnston Ridge Observatory, located nearby, was evacuated by helicopter on Monday, 15 May 2023, according to a Tweet from the King County Sheriff’s Air Support Unit.
St. Helens visitors often choose the convenient and renowned Johnston Ridge Observatory because of its close proximity to the summit and easy parking.
How does the eruption history work?
A hilltop in Washington State was covered with ash on May 18, 1980. An earthquake caused a landslide on the North Slope of Mount St. Helens that removed the mountain’s summit, causing a volcanic eruption that killed 57 people, destroyed rivers, and uprooted enough plants to build 300,000 homes.
