It’s understood that there are more girls than boys on Instagram. They love seeing photographs of celebrities, their friends, and family members. At the same time, they also love uploading their pictures on this channel. However, for every good thing, you also pay a price. And this is also applicable in the case of Instagram. Of late, security has become an important issue. So, how can girls keep their Instagram safe?

In the end, it all comes to taking precautions while using various social media channels. Users often get carried away and ignore basic safety tips that put their online security at risk. While driving on the highway, you may have seen billboards displaying messages like, “Drive safe to avoid accidents.” This is so true for a popular social media channel like Instagram. If you are careful and follow the basic safety tips, you will keep your account safe. But if you ignore them, it’s you who will pay the price.

You Should Convert Your Account Private

By turning your Instagram account into a private account, you can control who can see your posts. If you have a private account, you don’t need to block anyone to remove them. If you have a private account, you can control who can see your posts, or videos.  Besides, you can also turn off ‘Show Activity Status’, as this will not allow your friends to know whether you are online or not.

Two-Step Authentication

By using two-step authentications, you can increase the level of security in your account.  If you use this feature, you need an SMS security code to log into your profile from an unknown device.  If you have activated two-factor authentication, you will need to provide a unique login code or confirm login attempts each time you log in.  Through this, you will know when you try to login from an unknown device.

Share Your Story with Close Friends

You can create a list of close friends on Instagram and share your story with them.  At the same time, you can remove any of these or add even new friends.  The best part is once you are doing this, no notification will be sent to the concerned user.

Comment Filter

The good thing for Instagram users is that it lets them control which comments are offensive or intimidating.  The app has many features that take care of inappropriate content and phrases as well as intimidating comments.  In case you want to make a list of words and emojis that you do not wish to see in your comment section, you have to use ‘Filters’ in the comment control section of the post.

Who Can Tag or Mention You?

You can easily control this. Tags and mentions are normally used to intimidate or target someone. Therefore, Instagram has launched a new control feature that lets you determine who tags or mentions you.  You can choose between ‘every user’, ‘only the user you follow’ or ‘no one’ to tag or mention you.

Even if you don’t have a private account, you can decide who can see and follow you on Instagram.  This can be done by taking help from blocking tools.  To block an account, first go to the account profile and then to the settings on the top right and click on ‘Block user’.

Ideally, you should avoid swiping left on comments posted by someone, or can do the same with any profile you want to restrict.  Once you ban someone, only those comments that are made on your posts by the person you’ve banned will be visible to them.  By tapping ‘See Comment’, you can view comments and either approve or delete them.

Report any abuse, bullying, and harassment

If you see substandard content or a post that you think violates Instagram’s guidelines, go ahead and report it!  You are free to report against inappropriate content related to Profile, Posts, Stories, and Comments, etc.

Now, security on social media channels has become a big issue and it’s not only popular channels like Instagram or Facebook that are affected. Even a homegrown Indian social media app will have to face these issues.
