As Mariah Carey was recording her hit 1995 pop album Daydream, she and her fellow musicians were also secretly assembling a grunge album.

Carey first pointed out the presence of the key album in her own 2020 memoir, This Is of Mariah Carey. A form of the record was silently released at that time underneath the band name Chick, entitled Someone’s Ugly Daughter, with Carey singing backup vocals.

Inside a new interview using the podcast Moving Stone Music Now, Carey has shared that tracks from the alt-rock album together with her lead vocals have been discovered. And she or he hinted the elusive project will ultimately launch.

“I believe this unearthed version will end up, yes, something we ought to hear,” she told Moving Stone. She recommended, without supplying details, that they being building around the record by having an unnamed music performer: “I am focusing on a form of something where there will be another artist focusing on this beside me too.”

Mariah Carey described the work – recorded after lengthy days within the studio while focusing on hits for example “Continually Be My Baby” – being an outlet for herself during an occasion when she felt particularly restricted.

“I’d no freedom in that time. Which was my freedom, making that record,” she told the podcast.

Carey told Moving Stone she was inspired by bands for example Hole and Eco-friendly Day at that time. She adopted an alter-ego, as she remembered in her own book: “I had been having fun with design for the breezy-grunge, punk-light white-colored female singers who have been popular at that time. You realize those who appeared to become so carefree using their feelings as well as their image.”

At that time, she recalls there was some unease about her grunge lyrics. “I honestly desired to place the record out in those days under, you realize, exactly the same pseudonym, just place it out and become like, you realize whatever, allow them to uncover it’s me,” she told Moving Stone. “However that idea was type of stomped and squashed.”

Carey stated she even did the album art – a cockroach and a few scrawled lipstick. She remembers driving around, shouting lyrics to songs she authored that no-one understood.

Ultimately, she stated that the friend of hers named Clarissa Dane recorded lead vocals and authored a grunge song with Carey, also it was launched with Carey on backup vocals. That version is not broadly available.
