His father was a Seattle Police Department officer and his mother worked as a secretary. Miles attended Ballard High School where he starred in football, basketball, and track and field. In 2006, Sanders was named first team all-state in football and second team all-state in basketball.
In 2007, Sanders accepted a full scholarship to play football at Arizona State University. As a freshman, he started 12 of 13 games at left tackle and helped lead the Sun Devils to an 8-5 record and a berth in the Sun Bowl. ASU recognized Sanders’ talents by naming him to the All-Pac-10 First Team and the Pac-10 Co-Defensive Player of The Year Award.
In 2009, Sanders transferred to UCLA where he started 14 of 15 games at left tackle for the Bruins.
