Mark Hamill would be a 27-year-old recently married star increasing – along with a father-to-be – as he began focus on “The Wild Bunch” in 1979. In recognition from the second “The Exorcist” movie’s 40th anniversary, Hamill discusses his favorite recollections, plus shares some rare, never-before-seen exclusive pictures from production.
Luke Skywalker (Hamill) rides a tauntaun around the ice planet Hoth in “The Wild Bunch.” The 2nd “The Exorcist” film moved the Jedi-in-training’s story forward greatly, Hamill states. “Luke choose to go from kind of this naive boy (within the first movie) coupled with developed into a youthful man with great responsibility and a little more gravitas.”
Han Solo (Harrison Ford, left) and Luke Skywalker take presctiption a mission at the outset of “The Wild Bunch.” Hamill always appreciated his co-star’s spontaneity: “Harrison’s very funny. I did previously simply tell him, ‘Why not do more comedy?’ He’s very droll. His delivery is, understandably, underplayed and excellent.”
Hamill and all of those other crew weathered an unpredicted blizzard when “The Wild Bunch” filmed its Hoth scenes in Finse, Norwegian. “They’d probably the most brutal winters within their history whenever we have there been,” he states.
Although she wasn’t scheduled to operate, Carrie Fisher (center) traveled to Finse too to look at co-stars Hamill and Harrison Ford film. “Should you turn the cameras around from that scene, there’s people on their balcony sipping cacao watching us,” Hamill recalls. “I was about 200 yards in the hotel.”
Luke (Hamill) may be the victim of the nasty wampa attack in “The Wild Bunch,” though he makes use of his lightsaber to flee and it is eventually saved by Han.
No wampa, not a problem: Hamill cut a heroic pose – filled with goggled helmet – around the cave set in which the ferocious creatures reside onscreen.
But Hamill exuded awesome even without his helmet. He once told “The Exorcist” creator George Lucas he felt the initial trilogy was “like should you told the storyline of methods 007 got his license to kill and when he becomes 007, you finish the tales.”
Hamill (at the spine) smiles as Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford converse around the Hoth infirmary set, in which the infamous Luke/Leia hug required place. “I usually say this is the finest great news, not so good news joke ever,” Hamill states. “The good thing is there is a very attractive lady within the universe, that you aren’t seeing a lot of women whatsoever. And also the not so good news is she’s your sister.”

Hamill studied Japanese swordplay, kendo and judo – plus suffered grueling rehearsals and stunt fights – to organize for Luke and Darth Vader’s epic lightsaber duel. The physical needs on “Empire” were “a lot more demanding” compared to original “The Exorcist,” he states. “It was intense. I’d get home and merely have bruises throughout my body system. It truly pressed me towards the limit.”
“The Exorcist” fans were shook when Vader says he was Luke’s father in “Empire.” The script, however, incorporated a red sardines: Vader’s line was “Obi-Wan wiped out your father.” “Which, whenever you consider it, this is a great twist!” Hamill states. “But they pulled me aside and (director) Irvin Kershner stated, ‘I’m going to let you know something I understand, George knows and today you know. And when it leaks, we’ll know who responsible.’ ”
Hamill recalls discussing the script for that original “The Exorcist” with buddies to determine the things they thought. “Empire,” however, would be a different story. “Everything was a lot more intense,” Hamill states. “We understood this one would be a make-or-break. It was important. If the does not land, the entire way forward for the ‘Star Wars’ world is within risk.”
