A group at Shangqiu Municipal Hospital tested 38 male patients treated there in the height from the pandemic in China, in The month of january and Feb.

About 16% of these had proof of the coronavirus within their semen, they reported within the journal JAMA Network Open. In regards to a quarter of these were within the acute stage of infection and nearly 9% of these were recovering, they reported.

“We discovered that SARS-CoV-2 can trouble the semen of patients with COVID-19, and SARS-CoV-2 can always be detected within the semen of recovering patients,” Diangeng Li of Chinese People’s Liberation Army General Hospital in Beijing and colleagues authored.

“Whether or not the virus cannot replicate within the male the reproductive system, it might persist, possibly caused by the fortunate immunity of testes,” they added. Fortunate immunity means the defense mechanisms cannot fully achieve the location to fight viral invaders.

It isn’t an unexpected finding. Many infections can reside in a mans reproductive tract. Ebola and Zika virus were both found to spread in semen, sometimes several weeks following a male patient had retrieved.

It isn’t yet obvious if coronavirus can spread by doing this. Finding proof of virus doesn’t always mean it’s infectious.

“If it may be demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 could be transmitted sexually later on studies, sexual transmission may well be a critical area of the protection against transmission,” they authored.

“Abstinence or condom use are as preventive method for these patients. Additionally, it’s important to note that there’s an excuse for studies monitoring fetal development. Therefore, to prevent connection with a person’s saliva and bloodstream might not be enough, because the survival of SARS-CoV-2 inside a recovering patient’s semen maintains the chance to contaminate others.”
