Hema Malini’s Early Life
Hema Malini’s early life is filled with stories of hardship and perseverance. Born on January 15, 1952, in the town of Ammankudi in Tamil Nadu, India, Hema was the sixth of seven children. Her father was a farmer and her mother a homemaker. Hema started acting at an early age and began appearing in small theater productions. In 1969, she appeared in her first film role in the Tamil language film Thalapathi.
In 1973, Hema starred opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Vishal Bharadwaj’s blockbuster Hindi film Sholay. The following year she appeared in another major Hindi hit, Zanjeer. Her Political Career
Hema Malini started her political career as an Ammankudi councillor in the 1970s. In 1980, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha, and then served as minister of state for health and family welfare from 1998 to 1999. In 2002, she was made a cabinet minister in the government of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In 2009, she became chairperson of the Indian Film Development Corporation (IFDC). She has also been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 1988.
Malini’s film career began in the early 1970s with appearances in minor roles in films such as Bahura (1970), Mughal-e-Azam (1971), and Sholay (1975). Her breakthrough role came in 1975 with the release of Rajesh Khanna-starrer Shakti. Malini played the female lead opposite Khanna, who portrayed an abusive husband.
