Born on 3 November 1988 in a lower-middle class family in West Bengal, Khemu’s early life was not easy. He lost his father at an early age and had to fend for himself. Despite this difficult upbringing, Khemu developed a love for cricket at a young age.
Kunal made his first-class debut for Services in the 2008/09 season. That same year, he represented India A in the triangular series against Sri Lanka A and Australia A. In 2009, he made his Test debut against Bangladesh. He became the youngest Indian player to score a Test century when he scored 102 not out against Zimbabwe at Harare on 15 November 2009. It was also during this innings that he set another record – becoming the only batsman to score two centuries in an innings against Zimbabwe.
