Jones played college football at the University of Alabama. As a freshman, he started 10 games and completed 255 passes for 3,020 yards with 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. As a sophomore, Jones started all 14 games and passed for 3,593 yards with 29 touchdowns and only five interceptions while leading Alabama to an SEC Championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff National Championship game against Clemson.
