His mother was a gospel singer and his father was a jazz saxophonist. When Montell was just 12 years old, he won a talent contest and signed with Chess Records.

Montell Jordan was born in Mount Vernon, New York on November 4, 1969. At a very young age, Jordan began to show musical talent and started singing in church. He later attended the Berklee College of Music where he studied music composition and jazz saxophone. After graduating from Berklee, Jordan moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music.
Montell Jordan’s first professional job was performing with the vocal group 2Teks. However, it wasn’t until he joined the cast of “The Cosby Show” that his career really took off.
