LA
If you’re looking for a place to live that has culture and art, then LA is the city for you. It has a lot of great restaurants and coffee shops, which makes it easy to eat out if you don’t feel like cooking. The weather is also nice most of the time, and there are plenty of hiking trails nearby if you want to get some fresh air or exercise. NYC
NYC is often compared to LA, but the two cities are very different. For one thing, NYC has a much higher population than LA does; it’s home to 8.5 million people—more than any other city in the United States. That’s more than all of California!
It also has a reputation for being expensive: according to GOBankingRates, Manhattan was named America’s most expensive city in 2018 and has been consistently ranked as one of the most expensive places to live since at least 2010 (when they first published their rankings).
But there are also upsides—NYC offers a lot more cultural diversity than other big cities like Chicago or Atlanta (though Los Angeles isn’t exactly lacking that either). And if you’re looking for great food and entertainment options, this may be your spot: Zagat named New York City “America’s Foodiest City” back in 2008; while they’ve changed their methodology since then, there are still plenty of reasons why you might want to consider relocating here if you’re interested in exploring all those options!
LA Housing
The rent is always more expensive in LA, and that’s probably because you can’t afford it. But don’t worry! You can still live in a small studio apartment with roommates and work at a coffee shop while studying to be an actor or screenwriter.
LA has more affordable housing options than NYC, so if living on the edge of homelessness isn’t your thing, this may be a better option for you. In contrast with NYC’s wide range of affordable options, Los Angeles only has one type: expensive. If you’re looking for an affordable apartment in LA, then your options are pretty limited—you’ll likely have to settle on living somewhere near the beach or perhaps even in Malibu.
LA Transportation
Los Angeles has a good public transportation system, but so does New York City. However, traffic in both cities is bad and worsening.
NYC Transportation
New Yorkers have access to an extensive subway system, which is the largest in the world. It consists of 24 lines and more than 552 stations and stops. The average number of daily users is 5.5 million people. There are also a lot of taxis, buses, bike lanes, Uber/Lyft services (and similar ones), Zipcar car rentals available for residents to use for their transportation needs in NYC.
LA Parking and Traffic
It’s true that parking can be a hassle in LA, but it’s also true that traffic is a much bigger problem. In fact, according to the 2018 World Traffic Index, Los Angeles has the worst traffic congestion in America. The same study lists New York City as having the fifth-worst traffic congestion in the country. And while driving through Manhattan has its own unique benefits (you’ll experience firsthand how often people are willing to break rules), let us not forget who invented New York City: Robert Moses, who was also known as “The Power Broker.” He had an idea for how he wanted everything to look and acted on it ruthlessly until his vision was realized—and then some!
If you’re interested in living somewhere where there are plenty of good jobs available and plenty of great restaurants nearby but don’t want to deal with all those cars on top of each other every single day trying desperately not get into an accident with one another—well then maybe Los Angeles isn’t such a bad place after all!
NYC Parking and Traffic
Parking in NYC is expensive and difficult. New York has a public transportation system that’s unparalleled in its ability to get you from Point A to B, but it’s also notoriously crowded. So where does this leave you if you don’t want to fork over the cash for a parking spot?
Traffic is bad, especially during rush hour. Between gridlock-inducing construction projects and constant lane closures due to accidents (which are common), driving around Manhattan can feel like navigating an obstacle course of headaches—especially if there’s any construction involved at all.
There are lots of public transportation options available in NYC, but they can be difficult to use or seat-searching nightmares depending on the time of day or day of week your commute falls on; luckily most buses have wifi now so at least there’s that!
LA Restaurants and Dining Out
Many people believe LA has the best restaurants in the country, but it’s not exactly a cheap place to get a meal. Some of its more famous places, like Wolfgang Puck’s Cut or Animal, can run up to $200 for two people. If you’re looking for something more casual and less expensive, there are plenty of great options: Galco’s Soda Pop Stop is an old-school soda fountain with delicious shakes; Eggslut serves up some mean breakfast sandwiches; and Guisados offers tasty tacos at reasonable prices.
But if you’re looking for something more adventurous (and wallet-friendly), NYC is your city! It may seem counterintuitive but our theory is that because so many people want this experience at once—and because competition drives down prices—there are opportunities for deals whenever you go out on the town.
Some people prefer living in New York City, while others love the laid back lifestyle of Los Angeles.
New Yorkers have an affinity for their local landmarks and museums, whereas Angelenos are more likely to be concerned about which celebrity is dating who or what new restaurant opened this week.
