end of Internet Explorer

June 15, 2022 is the “deadline” for Microsoft to stop supporting most versions of Internet Explorer.

IE retirement is not the same as death.

Slowly but relentlessly, Microsoft has been pushing users to abandon IE and switch to Microsoft Explorer. In Windows 11, released in October 2021, Microsoft Edge replaced IE as the default browser.

Starting today, Microsoft will no longer support the IE 11 browser on some Windows 10 versions, namely: Windows 10 Client SKU (20H2 and later) and Windows 10 IoT (20H2 and later).

Microsoft did not say exactly when, but after a set amount of time “IE will be permanently removed on all devices with IE deactivation scope through future Windows upgrades. When “IE will be permanently deactivated on all devices with a Windows platform inside the area of IE disablement,” Microsoft did not indicate.

Although the firm stated that “the future of IE on Windows 10 belongs to Microsoft Edge,” they added that “for supported operating systems, IE 11 will continue to receive security updates and technical support throughout the life of the Windows version on which it is installed.”

Microsoft claims that the Edge browser delivers cutting-edge capabilities that boost productivity and is more adaptable in its response to security flaws. Additionally, it offers an IE mode that employs the Trident MSHTML engine in IE for older websites and the Chromium engine in Edge for current websites.

The IE mode in Edge supports a number of IE features (e.g., ActiveX controls).

Change to Edge’s IE mode, but leave IE in place!

A study by IT asset management company Lansweeper found that only 21% of PCs are running the most recent version of Windows 10 and that 47 percent of PCs need to be upgraded to Microsoft Edge by the deadline of June 15. The poll involved more than 9 million devices across 33,000 enterprises (version 21H2).

With only one in five Windows 10 machines running the most recent version, Lansweeper stated, “From our perspective, it’s not altogether shocking that the IE demise will touch so many devices.”

Enterprises may put off updates for a variety of reasons, such as being more cautious, having to deal with more urgent problems, or just not knowing what operating system version they are using.

Enterprises are advised by Microsoft not to opt to forego or delay Windows upgrades in order to keep IE11, which includes crucial operating system security patches.

Instead, Microsoft advised businesses to migrate to Microsoft Edge’s IE mode, which would extend technical support until “at least 2029.” Microsoft also cautioned businesses against uninstalling or removing IE11 because doing so would render the latter inoperable and prevent the IE mode in Edge from functioning as intended.

The capability and scope of data use will become one of the fundamental capabilities of multinational organizations and help form their competitive advantage in the global market as the world economy steadily transitions to a digital economy. As a result, MNCs must take the required steps to address the issues with cross-border data governance, which is a crucial question for MNCs to address in the age of digital civilization.
